Career Development Techniques for Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors

Becoming an effective Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor requires integration with the Workforce Development System and collaboration among leadership, partners, and staff to deliver efficient, effective, and empowering career development services to individuals with disabilities to increase quality employment outcomes.  Effective rehabilitation counselors must promote early engagement with clients to streamline career plans/pathways, barrier reduction, and the development of employment plans to help individuals achieve their employment goals.  Rehabilitation counselors must have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities as well as complete grasp of the tools and resources needed to competently address their client’s employment needs.  Attendees will learn strategies, competencies and best practices for effective service delivery that include:   

  • Understanding how to provide information and tools for career pathway development

  • Utilizing career assessment information to develop a comprehensive employment plan, including VR-related Career Services in the American Job Centers

  • Managing the career development process and eliminating gaps in service

  • Identification and acquisition of resources to support client success

  • Methods to work with employers to create opportunities for individuals and programs

  • Selecting tools and resources for assisting clients with disabilities in the job placement process

This training is designed to provide Rehabilitation and Workforce Professionals working directly with job seekers with disabilities the following competencies: 

  •  Career Case Management Best Practices

  •  Business Services and Job Development

  •  Assessment and Individual Development Planning

  •  Career Planning and Development Principles

  •  Communication and Collaboration

  • Ethics

Continuing Education: Successful completion of the class will provide each student with a certificate of completion and up to 9 hours of CRC Continuing Education Units

Cost: $595/person
Registration Fee | Payment for registration covers the two day training course and certificate fee if applicable. All other costs (travel and accommodations) are the sole responsibility of the registrant.  
Cancellation Policy | Cancellation requests can be submitted to Tressa Dorsey (tressa@tadgrants.com). A $75 cancellation fee will be applied to all refunds. Registration fees are non-refundable for cancellations made 30 days or less prior to the training start date. TAD Grants reserves the right to transfer registration fees on an individual basis and when training space is available.

Tina Anctil, PhD is a nationally Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor. She earned her PhD in Rehabilitation Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been in the field of Rehabilitation Counseling for over 25 years. Prior to her academic career she was a vocational rehabilitation counselor with the State of Oregon. For the past ten years, she has served as an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Counseling at Portland State University where she loves teaching career development to counselors in training. Tina maintains a private practice where she provides career counseling to individuals with disabilities and offers clinical supervision to LPC Interns in Oregon. She has numerous publications related to career counseling and people with disabilities and serves on the editorial board of Career Development Quarterly.
